PdD Activity | 13th November

I really should consider reorganizing my homework posts.

... what was our homework again? Oh yeah. Think of the potential of our thesis as part of a business plan. Something like that, right? To revise this project as something outside of the academic field, .

That is interesting. And it's funny, because I have this one author's article, who is half-way done with the answer to those questions. Marc Prensky seems quite enthusiastic with the prospect of digital game based learning, having written articles and books, such as "Don't bother me, Mom -- I'm learning" (you can find it in our college library), and he owns a company called Games2Train, where I suppose he applies his knowledge about game design and learning into his creations, and this is how he gets in business, by investing in serious games, DGBL, etc.

I don't want to dwell deeper about Prensky because I have yet to finish reading his articles, and some say the content of said articles is too turned to the entertainment and business side than academic. Still, he marks a strong presence within citations and references of other works.

Back to my project. The irony is, this project is stuck in the academic field no matter how much it tries to flee. Even if it goes off with a related business plan, where we're supposed to create a game and sell, make profit, it will still be about classrooms, about teaching, about learning methods, about students. At least, that's how I see it.

Yes, it is possible to do like Prensky, and create a game especially developed for classrooms, but are we making a specific product for one specific classroom/curriculum in a given school/high school/college, or are we selling a generalized product with any teacher/student can buy, no matter the differences between the same class, but in different schools? Because each path has its pros and cons.

On the other hand, I figure the results of this project and study will serve as useful information for other following similar projects, and move forward  with the study of alternative learning methods for classrooms, or even go further and adapt them to a business project. There will be something to be learned with this game, whatever it's about game design aspects in educational games, or the students' reaction towards the experience.

I should elaborate more about the subject, but you see, due to sickness and forced isolation period, my work for both thesis and the article from Estatisticas are beyond schedules. I need to finish reading the material and get back to my mentor.

It's November already, I think I'm still not quite aware how close we are to the day I'll fly off to another country and live there for six months. It's exciting and scary at the same time.
